In short, if you work in automatic mode, you set the decoded and the pduNum fields of OpenType to your sub-PDU to be carried by the OpenType value to automatically encode. In the manual mode, you call ossEncode() any times to encode all the sub-PDUs meant for carrying by the OpenType values, then you call ossEncode() one more time setting the encoded and the length fields of OpenType.
In automatic mode, you skip the additional calls to ossEncode() and instead you must pass the AUTOMATIC_ENCDEC flag to the runtime:
ossSetFlags(world, AUTOMATIC_ENCDEC|DEBUGPDU);
